Questioning the Status of Video Game Translation as Specialized Translation: A Linguistic Perspective
Abstract
This study intends to indicate how translation techniques, which are not specifically formulated for video game translation, are applicable for video game translation analysis in regard to the relationship between selected techniques and the translation quality. To prove that video game translation as specialized translation is assessable by non specialized translation techniques, five research procedures were undertaken. First, in-game menu assets of Dragon Nest were analyzed by using Molina and Albir theory to reveal the translation techniques used by the game translator. Second, translation quality comprising of accuracy, acceptability, and readability of in-game menu translation was analyzed by applying the theory from Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono. Third, the impacts of using selected translation techniques are analyzed in terms of translation quality. Fourth, focus group discussion (FGD) was exercised by inviting experts in translation, video game, and video game translation to validate the findings. Fifth, a comparison between theories claiming that video game translation needs to be analyzed from specialized translation perspectives and the findings of this study is presented to reveal the weaknesses and strength of both. The result of the study indicates that applying non-specialized translation technique theory discloses how particular selected techniques influence the level of accuracy, acceptability, and readability of the translated item. Meanwhile, specialized translation techniques circumnavigate only on the degree of errors. Navigating both specialized and non-specialized translation techniques might result in a comprehensive assessment.

Abstract
In today’s modern society, science and technology is indispensable in every sphere of our daily life, which has drawn greater attention on this area. Yet such heavy reliance makes other fields of study such as social sciences and humanities seem to be diminished and become a secondary choice. This paper will shed light on the issues encountered in the field of social sciences and humanities, namely policy making, research and development as well as innovation. This study is also set out to examine challenges faced by researchers in the field of social sciences and humanities, such as difficulties in obtaining sponsorship and research grants, lack of interest among youth and lack of media exposure. Several opportunities have been identified to revitalize the field of social sciences and humanities, such as establishing collaboration between universities and industry, conducting cross-disciplinary research and seeking unique and impactful pursuits. It is hoped that this study can raise awareness among policy makers to give strong support and assistance to this field so that we can continue develop our civilization and humanize people.
